A container sits at the terminal, customs clearance is delayed, and the next truck isn't due until tomorrow: that is dwell time in practice. Dwell time refers to the period a shipment, container, or vehicle remains at a port, terminal, or logistics hub between arrival and departure for the next destination. It covers all idle intervals—awaiting discharge, customs release, or onward transport—without productive movement. Short dwell times reflect smooth operations; prolonged dwell time generates demurrage charges and can ripple through the entire supply chain. Dwell time is distinct from free time, the grace period granted by carriers or terminals before demurrage fees begin.
