Unlike a fixed loading ramp, a dock leveler actively bridges the height gap between a truck bed and the warehouse floor, operated hydraulically, electromechanically, or by hand. Forklifts can drive directly into the vehicle without abrupt transitions that risk damaging goods or equipment. Dock levelers are standard equipment at distribution centres, cross-docking terminals, and any facility with high vehicle throughput. Most units feature lip seals that close the gap between the platform edge and the trailer tailgate, along with vehicle restraint systems that prevent the truck from rolling away during loading operations. Not to be confused with a portable dock plate or a yard ramp, neither of which provides powered height adjustment.
