A distribution center (DC) is a logistics facility built for high-throughput goods handling rather than long-term storage: products arrive from manufacturers or wholesalers, are sorted and picked to order, then dispatched to retail outlets, wholesalers, or end customers. The defining characteristic is speed – inbound shipments are turned around quickly, sometimes within hours through cross-docking. Unlike a central warehouse, a DC is optimised for flow, not stock depth. Many facilities include temperature-controlled or hazardous-goods zones and are strategically located to serve a defined catchment area with short delivery lead times. Outsourcing to third-party DCs allows shippers to scale capacity without committing to owned real estate.
