Working at the operational hub of haulage companies, freight forwarders, and logistics centres, dispatchers allocate runs, monitor vehicle availability, coordinate delivery windows with customers, and keep drivers informed of changes in real time. The role bridges day-to-day scheduling and medium-term fleet utilisation planning. When disruptions occur – a broken-down truck, a road closure, or an urgent customer request – the dispatcher is typically the first to respond and reroute. Not to be confused with dispatching as a process: the dispatcher is the person, dispatching is the function.
