The concept matters most for sensitive, time-critical, or high-value goods where every additional handling step increases the risk of damage or delay. In ocean freight, it means a direct port call with no transshipment hub; in air freight, a nonstop or through-service without rerouting or reloading. Direct shipments carry premium rates, but the trade-off – shorter transit times and lower damage rates – often justifies the cost for perishables, fragile cargo, or just-in-time supply chains. It should not be confused with through transport, where transhipment points with separate customs procedures may exist without legally interrupting the carriage.
