Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) is a wagon interface that replaces manual screw couplers with an automated system capable of connecting rolling stock and simultaneously transmitting data between vehicles. Traditional coupling requires trackside staff to work between wagons during shunting – a time-consuming and physically hazardous task. DAC eliminates this by coupling automatically on contact, while also carrying brake pipe signals, control data, and telemetry through the same connection. For freight operators, this translates to faster train assembly, lower labour costs in marshalling yards, and the infrastructure needed for real-time wagon tracking. Across Europe, DAC is regarded as the backbone of a digitally integrated rail freight system.
