Detention accrual occurs when a loaded or empty container remains in the care of the consignee or shipper beyond the contractually agreed free time (typically 5–10 days). Unlike demurrage, which is charged by the terminal operator, detention is billed directly by the shipping line. The party using the equipment beyond free time incurs daily charges of roughly 30–80 EUR per container, which continue until the unit is returned to the carrier's depot or agreed return point.
