In freight contracting, delivery time is the period between order placement and the physical handover of goods to the consignee. It varies considerably by transport mode and distance: express road shipments on short hauls can be completed within a day, standard less-than-truckload freight typically takes several days, and intercontinental ocean shipments several weeks. Agreed in the contract or general terms and conditions, it serves as the benchmark for punctuality assessments and any delay claims. Delivery time should be distinguished from transit time, which covers only the movement phase and excludes processing, customs clearance, or handling periods.
