Before a truck reaches the dock or a consignment is due at the warehouse, a delivery advice is typically issued—a written or electronic pre-notification sent by the shipper or freight forwarder to the consignee. It sets out the planned delivery date and time window, quantities, article numbers, purchase order references, and any special handling requirements such as pallet count, hazmat details, or temperature conditions. Receiving teams use it to schedule dock labor, allocate storage space, and prepare unloading equipment in advance. Without prior notice, discharge delays and unnecessary waiting charges are a common result. In EDI-enabled operations, delivery advices are often generated and transmitted automatically as part of the order fulfillment workflow. Not to be confused with the delivery note, which physically accompanies the goods—the delivery advice precedes the shipment.
