When post-Panamax or neo-Panamax vessels need to berth at a terminal, a deep water berth is a non-negotiable prerequisite. It provides sufficient water depth – whether naturally occurring or maintained through regular dredging – for fully laden large container ships to moor safely at any state of the tide. Ports without adequate depth must either limit vessel size or arrange offshore lightering, both of which add cost and delay. For carriers, a terminal's available draft is therefore a primary factor in port selection; for port authorities, it ranks as a core infrastructure investment as vessel sizes continue to grow. A deep water berth should not be confused with a standard quay that offers sufficient length but lacks the draft capacity for the largest ship classes.
