Deconsolidation in supply chains is the point at which a consolidated shipment is broken down at a distribution node and individual consignments are forwarded to their respective recipients or storage locations. The process typically occurs at cross-docking facilities or distribution centres when a single container or truck carries goods for multiple customers. For logistics providers, it translates into better warehouse utilisation, faster throughput, and lower buffer-stock requirements at the receiving end. It differs from transshipment, where cargo moves to another vessel or transport mode while the consolidated unit stays intact; deconsolidation permanently dissolves that unit, and each parcel then travels independently.
