Dangerous goods reporting refers to all mandatory documentation and notification obligations that apply when transporting hazardous materials – by road under ADR, by rail under RID, by sea under the IMDG Code, and by air under IATA DGR. Shippers, freight forwarders, and carriers must correctly declare the hazard class, UN number, packing group, quantities, and any special handling requirements in the relevant transport documents. Notifications to competent authorities – for example after an incident or when crossing borders with certain substances – are governed by separate provisions and are often subject to strict deadlines. Accurate documentation ensures full traceability in the event of an incident and serves as the basis for regulatory inspections. It should not be confused with hazardous goods reporting systems, which describe the ongoing, internal process of recording and analyzing transport data within a company.
