Unlike standard freight, dangerous goods packaging is governed by internationally binding standards that go far beyond ordinary strength or durability requirements. ADR (road), RID (rail), the IMDG Code (sea), and IATA DGR (air) specify how packaging must be constructed, tested, and marked – varying by hazard class, packing group, and mode of transport. Every compliant package bears a UN specification marking identifying the material type, design type, and tests passed. Non-compliance carries immediate consequences: cargo refusal, regulatory fines, and significant liability exposure for shippers and carriers in the event of an incident. These standards must not be confused with general packaging norms such as ISTA or ASTM, which do not constitute dangerous goods approval.
