The classification assigns substances and articles to one of nine internationally standardized hazard classes, ranging from explosives (Class 1) through flammable liquids (Class 3) to radioactive materials (Class 7). Freight forwarders, warehouse operators, and carriers use this classification to determine the required packaging type, labels, transport documents, and conditions of carriage. The system is grounded in the UN hazard classification framework and applied through mode-specific regulations: ADR for road, RID for rail, the IMDG Code for sea, and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) for air. Incorrect or absent classification exposes all parties in the transport chain to regulatory fines and, in the event of an incident, to substantial civil liability.
