> Customs value is the monetary basis on which import duties and related charges are calculated.

Customs value is the monetary basis on which import duties and related charges are calculated. The primary method is the transaction value – the price actually paid or payable for the goods at the time of importation. Certain ancillary costs, such as international freight and insurance to the place of importation, may need to be added; costs arising after the goods arrive at the frontier can generally be deducted. The governing international framework is the WTO Customs Valuation Agreement; within the EU, the Union Customs Code applies. An incorrect declaration can trigger additional duty assessments, interest charges, or customs penalties. Customs value should not be confused with the duty amount itself, which results from applying the applicable tariff rate to the customs value.
