The customs tariff number system provides a shared framework for classifying goods, setting duty rates and comparing trade statistics across borders. Its foundation is the Harmonized System (HS), developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), which assigns a six-digit code to every type of product and is applied in over 200 countries. Within the EU, TARIC (Tarif Intégré Communautaire) extends these codes to eight or ten digits, incorporating EU-specific duty rates, preferential arrangements and trade policy measures such as anti-dumping duties. For importers, exporters and freight forwarders, accurate use of this system is the prerequisite for compliant customs declarations and efficient cross-border movement of goods.
