A customs tariff number is a numerical code that uniquely classifies a commodity within an internationally recognised goods nomenclature, forming the basis for duty rates, trade restrictions, and import statistics. The foundation is the Harmonized System (HS) maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), applied by more than 200 countries and customs territories; the first six digits are identical worldwide. Most territories extend this base with country-specific digits: in the EU, the Combined Nomenclature (CN) uses eight digits, while the ten-digit TARIC code adds EU-specific measures such as anti-dumping duties and tariff quotas. Correct classification is the legal responsibility of the importer or their customs broker; an incorrect tariff number can result in duty back-payments, clearance delays, and penalties. Not to be confused with the EORI number, which identifies an economic operator, not a commodity.
