Unlike a simple nomenclature lookup, customs tariff classification involves not only identifying the correct commodity code but also assessing the resulting duty rates and fiscal implications. Every imported good is assigned a tariff code—in the EU the eight-digit Combined Nomenclature (CN) code, which is built on the World Customs Organization's Harmonized System (HS). Correct classification depends on factors such as material composition, degree of processing, country of origin, and intended end-use. Errors can trigger post-clearance duty demands, penalties, or the loss of preferential tariff benefits under trade agreements; in EU customs law, such subsequent demands take the form of post-clearance recovery.
