A customs security program is a government-run trusted-trader scheme that grants certified status to companies demonstrating defined standards for internal controls, supply-chain oversight, and physical security. The EU's Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme is the most widely recognised framework; counterparts include C-TPAT in the United States and equivalent schemes in Canada, Japan, and Switzerland. Certified operators benefit from fewer physical inspections, expedited clearance, and simplified declaration procedures. Mutual recognition agreements extend those benefits across borders, making certification strategically valuable for globally active importers and freight forwarders. Not to be confused with industry standards such as ISO 28000, which carry no direct customs-law effect.
