A customs receipt is the official proof-of-payment document issued by customs authorities once import duties, VAT, and any other applicable charges have been collected. It confirms that the financial settlement for a specific shipment has been completed and is typically required before goods are released. In freight forwarding practice, the receipt forms part of the permanent customs file and serves as evidence for the client that all dues have been discharged. It should not be confused with a customs assessment notice, which calculates and determines the amount owed – the receipt simply acknowledges that payment has been received.
