Unlike file-based transfers or manual customs submissions, a customs integration interface provides a fully automated, bidirectional connection between enterprise systems – typically ERP or TMS – and the electronic platforms of customs authorities. Customs declarations, supporting documents, and licence data are transmitted directly, while status messages and authority responses flow back into the enterprise system in real time. Standardized message formats such as EDIFACT or XML form the technical backbone, substantially reducing errors caused by manual re-entry. End-to-end traceability across the supply chain is achieved without additional reconciliation effort. The interface itself should not be confused with a managed customs integration service, which additionally covers operations, maintenance, and helpdesk support.
