A consignment of machinery arrives at the border and is flagged for closer examination: this is customs inspection in its most common form. Customs inspection is the official examination of goods by customs authorities to verify tariff classification, customs value, origin, and compliance with import and export controls. It takes place at the point of entry or in a customs warehouse, selected either through risk-based profiling of the declaration or by direct order of the officer in charge.
