Once a shipment enters the customs clearance process, the Customs Information System (CIS) takes over: a digital platform through which importers, freight forwarders, and customs brokers file electronic declarations, submit supporting documents, and track the status of goods movements. In the background, the system automatically validates declaration data against sanction lists and risk-assessment models, and coordinates data exchange between customs offices. Within the EU, NCTS for transit procedures and ICS2 for advance cargo information in air freight are among the most prominent examples. The CIS replaces paper-based workflows and measurably shortens release procedures. It forms the operational IT backbone of customs administrations – distinct from the customs tariff, which governs applicable duty rates.
