Throughout the customs clearance process – from tariff classification to rules of origin – freight forwarders, importers, and customs officers need fast access to reliable reference data. A Customs Information System is an electronic platform that centralises this access, providing up-to-date information on tariff rates, commodity codes, rules of origin, sanctions lists, and documentation requirements. Many national customs administrations operate their own systems; commercial providers offer complementary solutions with additional analytical and classification features. Companies using these platforms reduce declaration errors and avoid time-consuming enquiries to the authority. The Customs Information System should not be confused with a Binding Tariff Information (BTI) ruling, which is an individually issued, legally binding decision by the competent customs authority.
