The customs control process follows a formally structured sequence of official steps. It begins with an advance electronic declaration, after which an automated risk assessment determines whether the consignment will be cleared on documents alone or subjected to physical inspection. A physical check may cover weight, quantity, condition, and tariff classification, and may include the taking of samples. The process ends either with release of the goods – into free circulation or another customs procedure – or with a formal rejection citing the grounds for refusal. Accurate, complete documentation remains the most effective way for shippers and forwarders to avoid delays at this stage.
