> A customs compliance audit is a structured examination of whether a company correctly applies customs law and procedures across its import and export operations.

A customs compliance audit is a structured examination of whether a company correctly applies customs law and procedures across its import and export operations. Auditors typically review tariff classification under the Harmonized System, customs valuation methodology, origin determination and supporting documentation, accurate duty calculation and payment, and the completeness of declarations and accounting records. Companies commission these audits proactively – often to maintain Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status or to prepare for an anticipated customs authority review – so that gaps are identified and remediated before they result in penalties or back-duty demands. Findings feed directly into corrective action plans and updated process documentation. A customs compliance audit is not the same as a post-clearance audit carried out by customs authorities: the former is a voluntary, internally driven exercise where the company controls the scope and timing.
