# Customs clearance process

> The customs clearance process is the formal sequence of steps by which goods crossing a customs frontier are declared, examined and released by the relevant authority.

The customs clearance process is the formal sequence of steps by which goods crossing a customs frontier are declared, examined and released by the relevant authority. An importer or exporter—usually represented by a licensed customs broker or freight forwarder—submits the required commercial documents, including the commercial invoice, packing list and, where applicable, a certificate of origin. Customs officers verify the documentation, classify the goods under the applicable tariff schedule and calculate the duties, import VAT and any other charges due. Depending on the shipment's risk profile, a physical inspection may precede final release. The process also covers compliance checks for trade restrictions, import and export licences, and product safety regulations. Errors in tariff classification or incomplete documentation lead to clearance delays, additional assessments and, in repeated cases, financial penalties.
