Unlike the classification process itself, a customs classification system refers to the technical and organizational infrastructure used to assign tariff codes to goods in a consistent and auditable way. The foundation is the Harmonized System (HS) maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO); regional and national tariff schedules—such as the EU's Combined Nomenclature (CN) or the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)—extend the six-digit HS base to eight or ten digits. Modern systems are software-based: they parse goods descriptions, suggest applicable codes, calculate duty rates, and factor in free trade agreements and special procedures such as inward processing relief. For freight forwarders and trade compliance teams, a robust system means faster processing, fewer classification errors, and consistent documentation across all shipments.
