Common examples include inward processing, outward processing, customs warehousing, temporary admission, and Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status. The operator must complete a structured application process demonstrating financial solvency, organizational capability, and a clean compliance record. Unlike import licenses—which are commodity-specific and tied to a defined quantity or consignment—a customs authorization is an operator-level status that applies across multiple transactions over time. In EU customs law, authorizations are governed by the Union Customs Code (UCC).
