Freight forwarders, carriers, and warehouse operators use CBM – cubic meter – as the standard unit for measuring cargo volume, regardless of actual weight. One cubic meter is a cube with 1-meter sides. In LCL (Less Than Container Load) and air freight shipments, the volume is converted into a notional weight using a carrier-specific factor and compared to the actual weight; the higher figure is billed. Bulky, lightweight goods such as furniture, foam, or oversized packaging are therefore routinely rated by volume rather than mass. CBM should not be confused with chargeable weight, which is the billable result of that comparison and the true basis for freight invoicing.
