The facility functions purely as a transshipment and sorting terminal; goods typically dwell for only a few hours. The defining layout features inbound docks on one side and outbound docks on the opposite side, linked by sorting conveyors or transfer lanes. This configuration significantly reduces warehouse footprint, inventory holding costs and handling steps, making it a standard solution in consumer goods logistics, food retail and e-commerce distribution networks. Unlike a conventional distribution centre, a cross-dock facility is not designed to hold reserve stock – the entire operation is built around continuous throughput.
