The freight forwarder acts as the organising intermediary: selecting transport mode and routing, preparing and checking shipping documents—bill of lading, air waybill or CMR consignment note, commercial invoice, packing list, customs declaration—and arranging clearance on both the export and import side. The scope also covers regulatory compliance: export licences, dangerous goods requirements under ADR or IATA rules, and product-specific import restrictions. Critically, the freight forwarder is not the carrier: the forwarder organises and coordinates the transport chain, contracting physical movement out to shipping lines, airlines, or road hauliers. For most shippers, a capable forwarder is what keeps international delivery timelines predictable and border delays manageable.
