Critical infrastructure refers to facilities and systems whose disruption or failure would have serious immediate consequences for national security, economic stability, public health, or essential services. In the logistics and transport sector, this includes seaports, airports, rail networks, key road tunnels and border crossings, and customs processing facilities. For freight forwarders and supply-chain managers, dependence on such nodes is a primary risk factor: when a major port goes offline – due to a cyberattack, extreme weather, or industrial action – entire supply chains can be paralysed for days or weeks. Governments and operators are therefore required to maintain security frameworks, contingency plans, and redundant systems. In the EU, obligations in this area flow from directives specifically addressing the resilience of critical entities.
