Unlike a direct shipment, freight consolidation groups partial consignments from multiple shippers into a single transport unit – typically an LCL container for sea freight or a groupage consignment for air cargo. Spreading the carrier's fixed costs across several shippers lowers the rate per kilogram or cubic metre for everyone involved. Forwarders manage consolidation at container freight stations (CFS) or dedicated hubs, sorting cargo by destination region and departure window. Compared with direct or express services, the method is more cost-effective but requires longer lead times, as sufficient cargo must accumulate before departure. Consolidation should not be confused with cross-docking, where goods are transferred between vehicles without intermediate storage.
