Freight consolidation allows shippers to move small consignments at competitive rates by grouping cargo from multiple senders into a single outbound load at a consolidation warehouse or container freight station (CFS). At sea, this is the core principle behind LCL (Less than Container Load) services – each shipper pays only for the space or weight their cargo occupies rather than booking an entire container. In air freight and road transport the equivalent is known as groupage. Compared with a full container load (FCL) or full truck load (FTL), consolidation adds some transit time because cargo must be broken down and reassembled at both origin and destination – for small and medium-sized volumes, however, the cost savings are substantial.
