# Container Yard

> A container yard is a paved open-air area within or adjacent to a port terminal where full and empty shipping containers are temporarily stored between vessel loading, hinterland transport, and pick-up.

A container yard is a paved open-air area within or adjacent to a port terminal where full and empty shipping containers are temporarily stored between vessel loading, hinterland transport, and pick-up. Reach stackers, straddle carriers, and rubber-tyred gantry cranes organise the boxes by departure schedule, destination, and container type. Unlike a Container Freight Station (CFS), no stuffing or unstuffing takes place here – containers move as sealed units throughout. Once the free-time allowance is exceeded, demurrage charges begin to accrue, making efficient throughput a shared priority for carriers and shippers alike.
