The moment a container leaves the shipper's premises, every party in the chain needs to know its location, whether it has reached the port and when arrival is expected. A container tracking system captures and transmits the location, status and movements of freight containers across the entire supply chain – from origin through to the consignee. Several technologies work in parallel: GPS devices deliver real-time positioning, RFID transponders enable automated identification at defined checkpoints, and carrier EDI systems report port events such as loading, discharge and transshipment. The consolidated data reaches forwarders, shippers and consignees via dashboards, web portals or API interfaces, reducing response times when disruptions occur and providing the data foundation for ETA forecasting. Container tracking should not be confused with parcel tracking: it operates at the level of the transport unit, not the individual packages loaded inside.
