Container terminal operations begin the moment a vessel berths: quay cranes discharge inbound boxes, terminal tractors haul them to the stacking area, and rubber-tyred or rail-mounted gantries sort and store them until trucks or trains collect them for inland delivery. At the same time, export containers are retrieved from the yard, marshalled at the quay, and loaded onto departing ships. Every move – crane lift, gate transaction, stack position, customs release, hazmat check – is tracked and coordinated in real time by a Terminal Operating System (TOS). Operations are the execution layer of a terminal, translating planning decisions into physical container movements around the clock. They are distinct from terminal management, which covers capacity planning, investment decisions, and commercial strategy.
