To receive, handle, store, and release containers at a port or inland terminal, the facility operator levies a container terminal charge. Rates are applied per container move and typically vary by box size (20ft or 40ft), dwell time, and any additional services such as cleaning, repair, or restuffing. Unlike port dues or wharfage collected by port authorities, the terminal charge flows directly to the terminal operator and appears as a distinct line item on freight invoices. Freight forwarders treat it as a standard cost component and pass it through to shippers. It should not be confused with the Terminal Handling Charge (THC), which is billed by the shipping line and may bundle the same services under a different tariff structure.
