The freight forwarder or shipper places the booking directly with the carrier and receives a booking confirmation in return – the key operational document underpinning terminal scheduling. It specifies pickup windows at origin and delivery windows at destination. The slot booking differs from the freight booking, which additionally governs freight rates, payment terms, and contractual conditions; the slot booking concerns only the physical space on the mode of transport. Carriers typically reallocate the slot and may charge a no-show or cancellation fee if cargo fails to arrive within the agreed window.
