A shipment is packed, the transport document is ready – this is where container labeling takes over: every carton, crate, or pallet receives labels specifying contents, weight, destination, shipper details, and handling instructions. Machine-readable codes – barcodes, QR codes, or RFID tags – feed directly into automated sorting and routing systems at logistics hubs. Accurate labeling is a mandatory element of many customs declarations and letter-of-credit document sets; missing or incorrect labels can result in shipment holds or clearance delays. For dangerous goods, additional marking requirements under ADR, IMDG, or IATA DGR apply on top of standard labeling. Container labeling should not be confused with the structural approval markings on ISO shipping containers, which identify the equipment itself rather than its contents.
