Unlike documentation for a direct shipment, consolidated transport documentation follows a two-tier structure. A master document – the master airway bill (MAWB) in air freight or the master bill of lading (MBL) in ocean freight – covers the entire consolidated consignment in the carrier's system. For each individual shipper, the freight forwarder issues a separate house document (HAWB or HBL) identifying that party's specific cargo. Customs authorities and carriers work primarily with the master document; house documents serve the forwarder and its customers for customs clearance, payment, and tracking. In disputes or damage claims, the clear separation between master and house level carries legal significance, since each tier involves different contractual parties and liability frameworks.
