Consolidated container freight enters the picture as soon as a shipper's cargo volume is too small to justify booking an entire container. A consolidator or freight forwarder groups partial shipments from multiple shippers bound for the same destination port into a single box – a practice universally known as LCL, or Less than Container Load. Each shipper pays only for the cubic volume or weight their goods occupy, not for an entire unit. This is the core distinction from FCL (Full Container Load), where one shipper has exclusive use of the container. At destination, the box is broken down at a Container Freight Station (CFS), where individual consignments are separated for final delivery. For small and mid-sized exporters, LCL is often the most cost-effective route to regular ocean freight schedules.
