When an EU exporter ships goods to Canada, CETA should be the first trade agreement to check. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the European Union and Canada has been provisionally applied since September 2017, eliminating duties on approximately 98% of tariff lines and reducing non-tariff barriers that previously added cost and complexity to the EU–Canada trade lane. For freight forwarders and shippers, this means faster customs clearance and less paperwork on both sides of the Atlantic. Beyond goods trade, CETA covers services, investment, and public procurement, giving supply chain planners a broader and more predictable regulatory framework for transatlantic operations. Full ratification by all EU member states is still pending, but the trade-relevant core provisions are already in force and operative in daily customs practice.
