# Common External Tariff

All EU member state customs authorities apply the same duty rate to goods imported from outside the EU – that uniform rate is the Common External Tariff (CET). Enshrined in the EU's Common Customs Tariff, it applies at every point of entry into the customs union, regardless of which member state receives the shipment. This eliminates the incentive to route goods through whichever country offered the lowest national duty rate before the customs union existed. For importers, the CET provides predictability: the duty rate on a given product is identical throughout the EU. It should not be confused with anti-dumping duties or countervailing measures, which may be imposed on top of the CET for specific products or trading partners.
