Commodity classification systems come into play the moment goods are recorded, cleared through customs, or shipped internationally. They assign products standardized, globally recognized codes – the most widely used being the Harmonized System (HS) of the World Customs Organization (WCO), whose six-digit base codes underpin virtually every national tariff schedule; many countries extend them to eight or ten digits. Correct classification determines duty rates, import and export prohibitions, preferential tariff arrangements, and the requirements for transport, storage, and documentation. Freight forwarders, customs brokers, and trade compliance teams rely on these systems daily. Alongside the HS, other systems serve specific purposes: the EU's Combined Nomenclature (CN) builds on the HS for customs declarations and trade statistics within EU trade flows, while the NMFC classification governs freight rating in North American road transport.
