Commodity-based freight pricing is a rating system that determines transport charges according to the specific characteristics of a shipment: commodity classification, weight, volume, handling risk, and market demand. In North American less-than-truckload (LTL) transport, freight classes from 50 to 500 are applied—lower classes for dense, easy-to-handle goods, higher classes for light or oversized cargo. Hazardous materials, temperature-sensitive products, and high-value goods attract additional surcharges. Compared with flat weight-based or distance-based rates, this method is more transparent and cost-reflective: shippers pay rates that correspond to the actual handling requirements of their cargo. It differs from full-truckload or space-charter pricing, where entire capacity is sold as a single unit regardless of commodity type.
