Unlike a carrier that physically moves goods, a freight forwarder acts as an organiser: it arranges transport on behalf of the shipper without typically operating the vessels, aircraft, or trucks itself. Core services cover route planning, rate negotiation, carrier booking, export and import documentation, and customs clearance. Forwarders work across sea freight, air freight, road, and rail, and regularly manage multimodal shipments end to end. Their buying power and carrier networks allow them to secure rates and capacity that individual shippers often cannot access directly. Legally, the forwarder may act as agent or as principal depending on the contract structure; FIATA model rules provide an internationally recognised framework for the profession.
