Logistics operators run cold storage facilities to hold perishable goods at controlled temperatures and preserve their quality until delivery. Requirements differ by product: fresh food and many pharmaceuticals are typically stored at 2–8 °C, while frozen goods require −18 °C or below. Operations include continuous temperature logging and regular maintenance of refrigeration units – in the pharmaceutical sector often governed by Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines. Cold storage carries significantly higher energy and capital costs than ambient warehousing; charges are commonly billed per pallet position per day or per cubic metre. Cold storage should not be confused with refrigerated transport: the warehouse is the stationary element of the cold chain, while the reefer vehicle or container is its mobile counterpart.
