The deadline sits well ahead of actual departure to allow time for customs declaration, security screening, manifest compilation, and physical loading. Lead times vary considerably by mode: air freight cut-offs typically fall a few hours before departure, while ocean freight closing times can be several days before the vessel's sailing date. The cargo cut-off is distinct from the document cut-off, which applies only to the submission of shipping papers, not the physical arrival of goods. Missing a cut-off means the shipment rolls to the next available departure, with direct knock-on effects for delivery commitments throughout the supply chain.
